JANUARY
Temperature
January is one of the mildest months in Hong Kong. It\'s also the coldest, but it\'s not even that cold. Average temperatures don\'t fluctuate very much, and that will make packing for your stay much easier. The average temperature is 16°C, with daytime highs averaging 18°C and nighttime lows averaging 13°C. The coldest days will be towards the middle of the month.
Hong Kong has been experiencing some extreme temperature swings though. The observatory in Hong Kong recorded -1°C at the end of January 2018. One year prior, in 2017, Hong Kong recorded a record high temperature of a warm 25°C.
Rain
In addition to being the coldest month, January is also the driest month. This makes January perfect for exploring all of Hong Kong\'s outdoor attractions. You\'ll be able to leave all of your heavy raingear at home. There are on average six days of precipitation in January, with rainfall totals averaging just 21mm. The rains are rarely heavy. Precipitation does start to pick up towards the end of the month and going into February.
The last time it snowed in Hong Kong was 1975.
Sunshine Hours
Hong Kong sees an average of five hours of sunlight per day in January. Frontal systems start to come in during this time of year, so the chances of cloud cover increase as the month goes on. The beginning of the month is often the clearest, with clear to partly cloudy skies 72% of that time. That number decreases to 66% by the end of the month. Daylight lasts for, on average, 11 hours during January.
Humidity
January is the end of the \"dry season\" in Hong Kong. Relative humidity averages 73% for the month of January. It is usually drier in the beginning of the month, around 69%, and more humid towards the end of the month, up to 80%. If you don\'t like sticky skin, January is the best time to visit Hong Kong. Stay away from August.
Wind
The wind remains a fairly constant 5.5m/s throughout the month of January, coming from the east-northeast. Gusts are rare. Average winds are stronger in the beginning of the month and drop off towards the end of the month, but the differences are so insignificant that they are not worth noting.
Dress Code
January is a great time to visit Hong Kong. You\'ll want to bring long pants and long-sleeve shirts for the day, and a coat for night. Check the weather before you go, as Hong Kong has recently had some drastic temperature swings during the month of January. It\'s always a good idea to have raingear with you, but you won\'t need anything heavy with the normally dry days seen in January.
FEBRUARY
Temperature
Hong Kong starts to warm up in February with the coldest temperatures behind in January, but it can still get chilly. Average temperatures still have a fairly small range, much like January. The average temperature for the month is 18°C. Daytime averages are near 20°C while nighttime temperatures fall to near 15°C.
The temperature is fairly constant throughout the month; lows on February 1st average 14°C while lows at the end of the month only increase to 16°C.
Rain
Chances of rain start to increase in February, almost double that of the probability of rain in January. February averages nine rainy days throughout the month, with rainfall totals of approximately 33mm. There have been instances, however, when rainfall exceeded 126mm in February. You still won\'t need to pack your heavy raingear yet, though it\'s a small possibility. It hasn\'t snowed in Hong Kong since 1975.
Sunshine Hours
February in Hong Kong is characterized by increasing cloud cover. There are on average only four hours of sunshine in Hong Kong in February, the lowest of the year. That number doesn\'t start to pick up again until May. Skies are mostly cloudy or overcast 37% of the time in February, with cloud cover increasing as the month progresses.
\"Daytime\" still lasts close to 12 hours by the end of the month.
Humidity
Humidity levels start to rapidly increase throughout February, averaging 80% relative humidity during the month. The increase does start to level off towards the end of the month, and relative humidity doesn\'t increase very much after that until the end of summer.
February is still much more comfortable than July and August because of the cooler temperatures, so it won\'t feel as muggy.
Wind
Wind speeds don\'t fluctuate much throughout February, averaging 5.3m/s. Winds are predominantly out of the east, with some variances north of east and, rarely, south of east.
Dress Code
If you don\'t mind the cloudy skies, February is still a great time to visit Hong Kong with the cooler temperatures and fairly dry skies. Always be sure to check the weather first. But as a general rule, you\'ll be safe with long pants and a long-sleeve shirt, and a light coat for nighttime outings. It wouldn\'t be a bad idea to bring an umbrella or light raincoat either.
MARCH
Temperature
Hong Kong sees some very comfortable temperatures in March, not much higher than February but finally getting away from what some people would consider cold. The average temperature for the month is 20°C, with daytime averages hovering around 22°C and nighttime averages near 17°C. The average high in the beginning of the month is 21°C while it gets up to 24°C by the end of the month. Lows of 12°C and highs of 28°C have happened before, but these extremes are rare.
Rain
March wraps up the dry season in Hong Kong. It rains on average ten days this month, producing 45mm of rainfall. However, rainfall amounts have exceeded 218mm in Hong Kong in March. Because things really start to get wet in April, it\'s a good idea to bring some raingear.
Sunshine Hours
March continues the trend of cloudy days in Hong Kong. Like February, the sun only comes out on average four hours per day in March. It normally stays like this through April as well. The skies will be at least mostly cloudy 46% of the time.\"Daytime\" in Hong Kong averages 12 hours throughout the month of March.
Humidity
The increase in humidity that happens in February only increases slightly in March, from 80% to 82%. Because of the rising temperatures, you may start to feel slightly more uncomfortable with these humidity levels, especially towards the end of March.
Wind
The average winds in Hong Kong start to decrease in March, starting out with an average of 5.2m/s in the beginning of the month and tapering off to 4.8m/s towards the end of the month. They\'re predominately out of the east with periods of south-southeast winds.
Dress Code
Warming temperatures and increasing chances of rain make packing for Hong Kong in March trickier. You\'ll definitely want some comfortable pants or dresses for going out at night and wearing in the city during the day, and some nice short-sleeve shirts or blouses during the day. Nice shorts or skirts are advised if you\'re going to be active outside of the city center. And of course bring a light jacket; as they start to turn the air conditioning up this time of year it can get cold inside. Check the weather right before your visit for expected conditions. Don\'t forget the raincoat and umbrella.
MAY
Temperature
Hong Kong really starts to warm up in May. Average daytime temperatures hit 29°C and nights only cool down to 23°C. These temperatures make the May monthly average temperature in Hong Kong 26°C. Daytime temperatures towards the end of the month, going into June, are typically 30°C. On occasion, the daytime temperatures in Hong Kong can reach 33°C in May.
Rain
Rainfall in Hong Kong starts to pick up in May. It rains for, on average, 15 days out of the month, with rainfall totals averaging 158mm. Towards the end of the month, however, the 31-day average gets as high as 234mm. There is a small chance of tropical cyclone formation in May, though it is very early in the season for this. Cyclones rarely get close to Hong Kong but can increase rainfall.
Sunshine Hours
The days in Hong Kong are long in May, averaging 13 hours. However, with all of the rain, there\'s typically only five hours of sunshine every day in May. The skies are mostly overcast, with increasing cloud cover throughout the month. While there is only a 60% chance of mostly cloudy to overcast skies in the beginning of the month, that number increases to a 83% chance of cloudy skies by the end of May.
Humidity
Cloudy skies, rain, and increasing temperatures can make May fairly miserable. The average relative humidity in May averages 84%. With daytime temperatures near 30°C you may want to stay near air conditioning.
Wind
Hong Kong\'s winds in May keep a consistent strength from April, averaging 4.4m/s throughout the month. The direction of the winds starts to shift more southerly, with periods of easterly winds.
Dress Code
You\'ll want to think through what to pack when you visit Hong Kong in May. The increasing rains mean you\'ll definitely want to bring an umbrella and a raincoat. With the increasing temperatures and humidity, light, loose-fitting clothing will be more comfortable. But keep in mind that Hong Kong loves air conditioning, and some indoor locations can be downright cold. You may want to bring a light pullover for these locations. There\'s nothing wrong with wearing shorts and sandals while sightseeing in Hong Kong, but for going out at night you\'ll want something more conservative like long pants or a dress. Take a look at this forecast as you\'re packing for a better idea of expected weather conditions.
JUNE
Temperature
June in Hong Kong is hot, yet it\'s still not the hottest month of the year. You\'ll be encountering daytime averages of 30°C, reaching 32°C at the end of the month. Afternoons and early evenings are the warmest. Nighttime temperatures remain a warm 26°C. The overall average temperature in Hong Kong for June is 28°C.
Rain
June has the most number of rainy days in Hong Kong, but the rainfall totals aren\'t the highest of the year. June averages 19 days of rain, with rainfall totals averaging 237mm. There is not a lot of variation in rainfall totals or chances of precipitation throughout the month.
Tropical cyclone activity starts to increase in June, though chances of Hong Kong being affected by typhoon activity is low.
Sunshine Hours
The longest days of the year in Hong Kong are in June, with a fairly constant 13 hours 30 minutes of daylight. Hong Kong only averages six hours of sunshine every day though because of the cloud cover. June is one of the cloudiest months of the year in Hong Kong. Throughout most of the month, chances of mostly cloudy or overcast skies remain a constant 85%.
Humidity
June in Hong Kong is muggy and can be downright uncomfortable for spending time outdoors. The combination of clouds, rain, and high temperatures all contribute to extremely muggy conditions, increasing through the month. Stronger winds may help you, but it won\'t help much. The average relative humidity in Hong Kong in June is 83%. Air conditioning is your friend when temperatures reach 32°C with these humidity levels.
Wind
Winds in Hong Kong in June gradually increase through the month, with an average daily speed of 4.7m/s. The month starts at 4.5m/s and ends averaging 4.9m/s. The winds are predominantly southerly, with short periods of more easterly winds.
Dress Code
When you\'re packing for Hong Kong in June, there are a few items you\'ll definitely want. For one, a raincoat and umbrella, as it rains two-thirds of the month. Second, bring some comfortable clothing. Loose, lightweight clothing will keep you comfortable in the hot, humid weather. Shorts and sandals are fine for most of your sightseeing but you\'ll want to dress up some more for going out to Hong Kong\'s wonderful dinner establishments. Don\'t forget to check the fourteen-day forecast as you get closer to your trip.
JULY
Temperature
July is the hottest month in Hong Kong and the high humidity will make that even worse. If you\\\'re easily put in discomfort in high temperatures and humidity, you may want to avoid Hong Kong in July. The average monthly temperature is 29°C. Daytime averages reach 31°C and it starts warming up as soon as the sun rises. Nights only cool down to 26°C. It has been known to occasionally reach as high as 34°C.
Rain
July sees periods of dry spells, but when it rains it really dumps. July averages 17 days of rain throughout the month, with rainfall totals averaging 252mm. Hong Kong has the highest chances of seeing typhoon activity in July, with the odds of that happening at least once this month. When typhoons are south of Hong Kong the winds will be light and temperatures unbearably hot. As the typhoon gets closer to Hong Kong, winds will increase and torrential rains will start to fall. These usually always lead to flooding.
Sunshine Hours
July has just over thirteen hours of daylight every day, and averages seven hours of sunshine every day. July only sees a slight decrease in cloudiness from June; chances of an overcast or mostly cloudy sky average 82% throughout the month with little variation.
Humidity
The humidity in Hong Kong in July is best described in one word - miserable. Average relative humidity is 82%, but the high temperatures make it worse. Overcast skies and rain will increase the humidity levels while clear days will only increase the temperature. The nights are typically just as bad as during the day. Most of Hong Kong is in the air conditioning during July.
Wind
Winds start to decline in July in Hong Kong, though nearby tropical cyclone activity is definitely an exception to this. The month starts off with average winds of 4.8m/s predominately out of the south, and July ends with average wind speeds of 4.5m/s with more periods of easterly winds.
Dress Code
You\\\'ll need to consider three things when packing for Hong Kong in June. Hot, humid air outside; cold, dry air indoors; and periods of heavy rains. You\\\'re best off wearing some loose-fitting, light clothing for outdoor exploration. Shorts and sandals are acceptable but know that there are many establishments where long pants are required. These places are usually in some cold air conditioning, so that won\\\'t be a problem. It\\\'s always a good idea to bring a nice raincoat and umbrella in case you\\\'re stuck in the heavy rains. Check the fourteen-day forecast right before you start packing for a better idea of expected weather.
AUGUST
Temperature
Even though July is the hottest month in Hong Kong as far as records and averages go, don\'t think that it\'s going to cool down much in August. In fact, much of the weather in August is similar to July. The overall average monthly temperature is 29°C, with average daytime temperatures of 31°C and nighttime temperatures of 26°C.
Rain
August is typically the wettest month in Hong Kong, with 17 days of rain and rainfall totals averaging 281mm. The likelihood of Hong Kong being affected by a typhoon in August is lower than the months surrounding it, but there is still a chance of at least one tropical cyclone affecting the weather in Hong Kong in August. When this happens, expect high winds and extremely heavy rains that could lead to flooding.
Sunshine Hours
The days are starting to get shorter now in August, but are still over twelve and a half hours long. Of that, Hong Kong averages seven hours of sunshine every day with cloud cover. At the beginning of August you can expect an 82% chance of mostly cloudy or overcast skies, with that number decreasing to a 76% chance by the end of the month.
Humidity
August in Hong Kong is still miserably humid, much like July. Relative humidity stays at an average of 82%, with that number decreasing slightly towards the end of the month but nothing worth noting. It\'s still very humid, and if this makes you uncomfortable, you may want to avoid Hong Kong in the summer. Almost all buildings blast air conditioning, but you\'ll have to go outside at some point.
Wind
Average winds in Hong Kong in August are 4.3m/s. Most winds are from a southerly direction in the beginning of the month, and become more easterly towards the end of the month. If a cyclone is south of Hong Kong you can expect the winds to be light, but they will rapidly increase if the cyclone moves closer.
Dress Code
You\'ll want to dress comfortably for the muggy August air. You can explore the city and the outlying islands in shorts and sandals. However, if you enter certain establishments, especially dinner restaurants, you\'ll be expected to wear long pants or dresses. Lightweight clothing will be more comfortable, and keep in mind that many indoor locations can actually be somewhat cold from the air conditioning. Don\'t forget to bring a good raincoat and an umbrella. Check the fourteen-day forecast for a more accurate picture of expected weather before your trip.
SEPTEMBER
Temperature
September marks the end of summer and the rainy season in Hong Kong. Temperatures are still hot in the beginning of the month, but they\'ll cool down as September progresses into August. The overall average monthly temperature is 27°C, a 2-degree drop from August. Average daytime temperatures are 29°C and nighttime temperatures average 25°C.
Rain
As the rainy season wraps up in September, rainfall amounts drop significantly. September rainfall totals in Hong Kong average 166mm, almost half that of August. There are on average 14 days of rain in September. With that said, there is a high probability for Hong Kong to be affected by a tropical cyclone in September, with an occurrence of 1.5 typhoons in Hong Kong in September. Rainfall amounts will dramatically increase and usually cause flooding.
Sunshine Hours
The days in Hong Kong average twelve hours long in September, with an average of six hours of sunshine every day. Cloud cover really starts to decrease as the month goes on. In the beginning of September there is a 75% chance of mostly cloudy to overcast skies, with that number falling to 56% by the end of September.
Humidity
Don\'t think that the slight drop in temperatures in September will relieve you of the unbearable humidity from August. The average relative humidity for the month does drop to 77%, but you\'ll be more comfortable at the end of the month. The beginning of September can certainly feel like summer as far as temperatures and humidity are concerned.
Wind
Winds start to pick up in September, averaging 4.4m/s for the month but picking up to 5.0m/s by the end of the month. In the beginning of September the winds will be a mix of southerly and easterly directions, with those easterly winds starting to settle in by the end of the month.
Dress Code
Because September can vary so much, be sure to check the fourteen-day forecast for a better idea of what you should pack. Generally, for the whole month, you\'re best off packing for summer. Consider loose, lightweight clothing to make the humidity more bearable. Wear comfortable clothes when exploring the city and outskirts, and shorts & sandals are just fine for this. You\'ll want to dress up more for going out to dinner or partaking in nightlife, so pants and a dress are a must. A light raincoat isn\'t a bad idea either.
OCTOBER
Temperature
Hong Kong experiences a nice cooling down in October. If summer was too much for you, fall is a wonderful season in Hong Kong. The average monthly temperature is 26°C, though the end of the month is much cooler. Daytime temperatures start out at 30°C but cool off to 27°C by the end of the month. Night temperatures average a pleasant 23°C.
Rain
October is considerably drier than the previous months. On average it only rains for 8 days in October, yielding rainfall totals of only 41mm. Typhoon season is not quite over, however. The mean occurrence of a tropical cyclone hitting Hong Kong in October is 0.9, so you can expect some kind of activity, much more so in the beginning of the month. This is when the rains will fall, and expect winds to increase also.
Sunshine Hours
The days in Hong Kong last almost 12 hours in the beginning of the month and shorten to just over 11 hours at the end of the month. Expect to see the sun for an average of six hours per day. The chances of an overcast or mostly cloudy sky are 56% in the beginning of October, tapering off to 40% towards the end of the month. Otherwise, the skies are mostly clear or partly cloudy.
Humidity
The average relative humidity drops to a tolerable 73% in October, helped out by decreasing rainfall and temperatures. October will still feel humid, just not nearly as bad as the summer months. Still, if you don\'t like humid conditions at all, you\'re best visiting Hong Kong in winter.
Wind
Winds continue to pick up in speed from their increase in September, averaging 5.3m/s and reaching an average of 5.6m/s by the end of the month. Winds are almost completely out of the east in October, with some periods of more northerly winds.
Dress Code
Depending on when you visit in October - check the fourteen-day forecast first – you\'ll have to pack differently. October can still feel warm and humid, so you\'re best off bringing loose, light, comfortable clothing for exploring Hong Kong\'s many attractions. Shorts and sandals are fine for most establishments. Make sure you bring long pants or a dress for dinner, as many restaurants require nicer dress. And don\'t forget that Hong Kong loves air conditioning, so you may even want a light coat or jacket for indoors. As temperatures cool down towards the end of the month you may want to take that into consideration.
NOVEMBER
Temperature
November temperatures in Hong Kong are very pleasant and make this month a great time to visit. The average monthly temperature is only 22°C, which is cool by Hong Kong standards. Daytime temperatures average 24°C and nights cool down to a mild 19°C.
Rain
November is one of the driest months of the year with rainfall totals down to 22mm. On average it rains six days out of the month. For comparison, January is the driest month of the year with a close 21mm of rain. Tropical cyclone season is more or less over, though they have been known to pop up in November every now and then. Still, it\'s not something you should have to worry about.
Sunshine Hours
Daylight lasts for close to 11 hours in November. With some cloud cover thrown in, expect to receive an average of six hours of sun per day. November sees a 40% chance of overcast or mostly cloudy skies in the beginning of the month, decreasing to 31% at the end of the month.
Humidity
The humidity levels are very bearable in Hong Kong in November, especially towards December. The average relative humidity is 71%, and with cool temperatures you should be quite comfortable.
Wind
Wind speed averages 5.7m/s through the month of November, increasing towards the end of the month. Winds are mostly out of the east, with some periods of northerly winds.
Dress Code
The weather in Hong Kong in November makes packing easy. You won\'t need to beat the heat, and you won\'t be freezing either. Still, due to variations in weather patterns, check the fourteen-day forecast right before you go to Hong Kong. You can still wear shorts and sandals for exploring the city and outlying islands, and it\'s a good idea to bring some comfortable long pants and shoes if it cools down and for night. If you plan on eating dinner out at Hong Kong\'s many restaurants, it\'s a smart idea to bring some nicer pants and a button-down shirt for the men and a dress for the women, with a light jacket or pullover for the cooler evenings.
DECEMBER
Temperature
Hong Kong cools down considerably in December, though it\'s not the coldest month of the year. The coldest month is January, but it\'s only colder by a couple of degrees. The average monthly temperature for December is 17°C and you\'ll find locals bundled up quite a bit with that mild temperature. Daytime temperatures average 20°C and nights cool down to 14°C. It has been known to reach as high as 26°C and as low as 10°C in December.
Rain
December is one of the driest months of the year, together with November and January. December rainfall totals average 21mm, which is the same as January. It only rains for an average of four days during the month of December in Hong Kong. The chances of a tropical cyclone hitting Hong Kong in December aren\'t quite zero, but they\'re so rare this month that it shouldn\'t be of concern.
Sunshine Hours
December has the shortest days of the year, at just less than 11 hours long. Chances of overcast or mostly cloudy skies average near 30% the entire month. With this you\'ll receive an average of six hours of sun per day in Hong Kong in December.
Humidity
December has the lowest humidity of the year, averaging 69% relative humidity. This makes December a great time to visit for those who can\'t stand sticky skin and thick, damp air. The beginning of the month may feel slightly more humid, but overall the entire month is very comfortable.
Wind
December is the windiest month of the year as far as historical data is concerned, averaging 5.9m/s for most of the month with a gradual tapering off towards January. Winds are predominately out of the northeast.
Dress Code
Take a look at the fourteen-day forecast before you start packing for a better idea of what to expect. In general, you\'re best off packing some comfortable long pants for city exploration, with something a bit nicer for dinners in Hong Kong\'s many fancy restaurants. You may want a light pullover or light coat for late in the evening when the air starts to cool. Some restaurants don\'t allow shorts or sandals.
